Welcome to FRIENDS of CECAINI Reunion Trip 2017!

cecaine-photo5The community of Rio Grande invites you, your friends and family to join the Friends of CECAINI and Building Legacies International as we begin work on the dining hall for the new school in the Rio Grande community. A Lifetouch Memory Mission in 2018 will complete the dining hall. There are also plans to build a basketball court and a playground.

Rio Grande, a very poor area on the outskirts of Constanza, has a one room school that serves 16 students. In 2016 and ’17 the first and second floors of the CECAINI school in Rio Grande were built through the efforts of the Lifetouch Memory Mission consisting of Lifetouch employees and educators from NSB, AASA, NASSP, NAESP, and NPTA. A Reunion Team and a Student Team also contributed toward finishing the first and second floors of the Rio Grande school, which when complete will serve 120 children.

cecaine-photo1The Constanza area consists of about 90,000 inhabitants, located in a hilly area about 150 km from the capital city of Santo Domingo. Because of the good climatic conditions this is a strong agricultural area, however, there are large groups of people living in poverty. The people earn little and live in shacks without water and proper sanitation. Haitians, brought to the Dominican Republic to work on the sugarcane plantations, have an even more difficult time. They are often discriminated against. There are approximately 1,000 Haitian children who roam the streets alone having been abandoned by their parents. Many children in Constanza were not going to school because education was not available to them. Something had to change.

cecaine-photo2From 2011 through 2015 employees from Lifetouch and educators from NAESP, NASSP, AASA and NPTA joined CECAINI constructing an elementary school, a dining hall and a vocational school in Constanza. With the help of the Reunion and Student trips the second floor of the vocational school and basket ball court were completed. The vocational provides hands on learning in beauty salons, sewing, woodcrafts, cooking, the service industry, the arts & music and computer training. This is providing the needed training for better jobs and employment opportunities. Over 200 students are now attending the CECAINI school in Constanza.

cecaine-photo3Building schools is important work but it is just as significant to build relationships that bring hope to the community and among the teams of volunteers. Money brings aide but people bring hope.

cecaine-photo4We would love to have you join Building Legacies International with this important life transforming opportunity.
