Welcome to the Rio Grande Student Service Project!

Serving the Community of Constanza and Rio Grande, Dominican Republic

student-service-photo1Rio Grande is a small barrio just outside of Constanza where children are beginning to have hope because of the new school that is being constructed in their community. Constanza is a town of about 90,000 inhabitants, located in a hilly area about 150 km from the capital city of Santo Domingo. Because of the good climatic conditions this is a strong agricultural area, however, there are large groups of people living in poverty. The people earn little and live in shacks without water and proper sanitation. Haitians, brought to the Dominican Republic to work on the sugarcane plantations, have an even more difficult time. They are often discriminated against.  There are many children in Constanza area who are not going to school because education is not available to them. The community leaders in Constanza wanted to address this glaring need and asked Lifetouch to help construct a school for the children in the area.

Since 2011, working in partnership with Lifetouch and in conjunction with participants from the NAESP, NASSP, and ASA resulted in the construction of the Cecaini Primary School and a vocational training center. These teams also built many lasting friendships in the community. Pastor Angel Moreta and the Constanza community are excited to welcome back their friends from that mission to come serve alongside them again in a new school in Rio Grande a barrio of Constanza.

student-service-photo2For those of you who were a part of these past trips, you are aware Pastor Angel and the local church are trying to care for different groups within the community.  There are plans to build an experimental farm and vocational center where people, including drug and alcohol addicts, can learn and gain vocational experience in agriculture, as well as woodworking, computers and sewing.

In January 2015 a Lifetouch Memory Mission worked on constructing the second floor of the vocational school and the first Student Service Project completed it and built a basketball court.

student-service-photo3The Constanza Student Service Project April 21-27, 2016 finished work on the first floor of a new school in Rio Grande started by Lifetouch Memory Mission in January 2016. This school is a part of the CECAINI vision and we will continue to work with Pastor Moreta and his team.

student-service-photo4The July 11-17, 2017 Student Service Project worked to complete the second floor of the Rio Grande School thus making it possible for children who have no education or are walking 3 miles each way to school to have education available in their own community.

The July 30-August 6, 2018 Student Service Project will work to complete the dining hall for the Rio Grande School, making it possible for children who have no education or are walking 3 miles each way to school to have education available in their own community as well as a nutritional meal each day. For many children, this will be the only meal of their day

Please consider joining us in this important life transforming opportunity for you and the community of Rio Grande.
